Many people use the terms asteroid and meteor interchangeably. Since this makes my brain sad, I decided to clear things up a little bit.
Asteroid-Small solar bodies that revolve around the sun.
Meteoroid- A small fragment of an asteroid which revolves around the sun.
Meteor- A meteoroid that enters the atmosphere and burns up (a shooting star).
Meteorite- A meteoroid that survives entry into the atmosphere and makes
contact with the planets surface.
